Mohammad Haneef is back in Bangalore after a 43-day pilgrimage to Mecca. Last year, the Indian hit the headlines after the Australian government detained him in connection with Glasgow terror strikes. After many traumatic months, the government withdrew all the charges and restored his visa.

In an exclusive interview to the TOI, his first-ever media interaction in three months, the relaxed doctor who has moved into a new house, shares his tumultuous Australian experience and shattered career, future plans.

Life Down Under: I was victimised. I am a victim of circumstances. The whole episode was politicised. Politicians who were ruling the roost wanted to make it a poll issue with elections nearing. On the pretext of making Australia safe, they made me a scapegoat. But truth prevailed, and at the end there was a change in government.

The experience was traumatic, especially during solitary confinement. But I was looked after very well. The prison authorities were very kind to me. In fact, it wasn’t the Indian embassy which provided legal aid but the Australian prison authorities. Peter Russo just happened to be there for me. The sergeant at the prison took Peter’s number from the diary and gave it to me. And to my luck, at that time he was free. He has been my moral support and my backbone during the trial. If not for him, I don’t think I would be here and my life would have taken a different course.

The cops ransacked my Gold Coast home. They painted the entire house with polish to get fingerprints, stripped the house for clues and seized my belongings. Certain valuables are still with my owner. Though the police have restored the house, the owner is demanding thousands of dollars for those valuables. I don’t owe him anything as I have cleared all the dues.

Future course: I am considering all the options. Within 15 days, I will take a call. The options before me are the Gulf countries, India and Australia. My family is against me leaving the country. But Peter Russo has been asking me to go to Australia as soon as possible. After going through the entire trauma, there is a sense of fear in my family, and me. That is the only block. I want the authorities to assure me that I won’t be bothered anymore. My lawyer has been in touch with Gold Coast Hospital and it looks like there are positive chances of my going there. Source: timesofindia.indiatime

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram will review Karnataka’s financial performance by January-end.

A decision to this effect was taken at the executive committee of the Karnataka government chaired by Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur along with his advisors P P Prabhu, S Krishna Kumar and P K H Tharakan.

Rameshwar Thakur said, “When Union finance minister was here last week, he expressed his desire to conduct a financial and physical review of the state’s performance during the last nine-months (April to December).”

“As a preparation for the review meet, executive committee took a decision to call for a meeting of deputy commissioners (DCs) meet to review the progress made at the state and district level during the first nine months and review their needs for the next three months (January to March),” he added.

“No work in Karnataka will stop for wants of funds. All DCs have been told to submit their progress report for nine months and submit proposals for the next three months (January to March),” he further added.

The executive committee also reviewed the progress made in updating electoral list in the state. The committee also reviewed its performance since the imposition of the President’s Rule. “We felt some degree of satisfaction. Implementation of the decisions was also satisfactory,” Thakur added.

Congratulating the KSRTC for earning revenues of Rs 1,000 crore in less than nine months this year (2007-08) as against 11 months last year, Rameshwar Thakur said, “This transport corporation should be a model for other states to emulate.”

According to Tharakan, “The corporation is expected to see revenues of Rs 1,333 crore by the end of fiscal 2007-08. The executive committee has sanctioned a two-year project of Rs 19.6 crore to improve infrastructure at the Institute of Diary Sciences and Technology at Gulbarga.

According to advisor P P Prabhu, “A sum of Rs 6 crore has been sanctioned immediately for the diary sciences project.”

Since diary has huge employment opportunities, it has been taken up on priority,” he added. The committee also took the decision to prepare and submit a detailed project report on relief and resettlement of flood-affected villages in North Karnataka.

“For resettlement, the Union home minister during his visit a few days ago has asked us to prepare a detailed report in consultation with gram sabhas and submit it to the Centre for its review and for additional grants,” said Prabhu.

Tharakan said, “The state government has sought additional funds of Rs 20 crore in addition to the already sanctioned Rs 80 crore to take up the mega city police project.”

The mega city police project is being conceived as a blueprint for modernisation of the police force after emergence of greater Bangalore by bringing in more areas under civic corporation.

“Additional funds will be used to improve police infrastructure like communication, mobility, training and housing needs of policemen,” Tharakan added. Source: business-standard

The killing of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in a presumed suicide attack at an election rally in Rawalpindi has drawn widespread national and international condemnation.

PAKISTAN OPPOSITION LEADER NAWAZ SHARIF
It is not a sad day, it is a dark, darkest, gloomiest day in the history of this country. Something unthinkable has happened. Something inconceivable, unthinkable has happened.

US STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN TOM CASEY
Certainly, we condemn the attack on this rally. It demonstrates that there are still those in Pakistan who want to subvert reconciliation and efforts to advance democracy.

FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY
I condemn this odious act with the greatest severity.

Terrorism and violence have no place in the democratic debate and in the combat of ideas and programmes. More than ever it is necessary for the [Pakistani] legislative elections to… take place in conditions of pluralism, transparency and security.

UK FOREIGN SECRETARY DAVID MILIBAND
In targeting Benazir Bhutto, extremist groups have in their sights all those committed to democratic processes in Pakistan.

They cannot and must not succeed.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN MIKHAIL KAMYNIN
We firmly condemn this terrorist act, we express our condolences to Benazir Bhutto’s relatives and loved ones, and we hope that the Pakistani leadership will manage to take necessary steps to ensure stability in the country.

VATICAN SPOKESMAN FREDERICO LOMBARDI
This attack shows how extremely difficult it is to pacify a nation so wrought by violence.

We share the sadness of the Pakistani population.

INDIAN PRIME MINISTER MANMOHAN SINGH
In her death the subcontinent has lost an outstanding leader who worked for democracy and reconciliation in her country.

The manner of her going is a reminder of the common dangers that our region faces from cowardly acts of terrorism and of the need to eradicate this dangerous threat.

After surviving several assassination attempts in the past, PPP leader Benazir Bhutto was not so lucky on Thursday as she was killed by two gunmen who opened fire at her right after she finished addressing a rally at Liaquatbagh.

Bhutto got off the stage after addressing the rally and started moving towards her car. Her vehicle moved a certain distance and she was surrounded by party supporters.

She came out of the car and just then two attackers with AK 47s pumped her with bullets, one in the neck and two in the head, before blowing themselves up.

The attack also killed more than 20 people and left several others injured.

Following Bhutto’s death, a high alert has been sounded in Pakistan. President Musharraf has convened an emergency meeting of top advisors. Shops and petrol pumps have closed in many cities fearing violence.

Shops across Rawalpindi are being torched by PPP supporters. Asif Zardari and his children are on their way to Karachi.

According to preliminary reports, Benazir finished the rally at 5:30 pm at Liaquatbagh and was on her way back to Ralwal. She got into the car and was soon after attacked by two people with AK 47s. A suicide bomber blew himself up next to car.

Nawaz Sharif described Benazir Bhutto’s assassination as the most tragic incident in the history of Pakistan.

”I myself feel threatened,” says Sharif, whose party temporarily suspended the electioneering in the wake of the assassination.

”Are things in control now? Had things been in control, would this have happened?” he said, adding that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf would have to give answers.

”I also feel unprotected and the lady must also have been feeling very unprotected,” Sharif said.

Criticising Musharraf, he said, ”If Musharraf can spend crores on his own security, could he not spend some amount on the security of Bhutto.”

Fifty-four-year-old Benazir was rushed to Rawalpindi general hospital, where she was pronounced dead nearly 40 minutes later.

”We are traumatised. People all over are crying. Everyone is saying that this Army has killed Benazir. There is going to be more bloodshed. Will the world now finally wake up? said a distraught Asma Jehangir, Chairperson, Pak Human Rights Commission.

”It is very tragic. It has shocked every Pakistani,” said Ayaz Amir, columnist.

Prof. Bhim Singh, Chairman of the National Panthers Party and Member of National Integration Council (NIC) while condemning the brutal assassination of Benazir Bhutto Pakistan’s foremost political leader and the former Prime Minister termed it as most cowardice act of the terrorists and total failure of Pakistan government.

Bhutto is survived by her husband Asif Ali Zardari and three children. Before she returned to Pakistan in October, Benazir Bhutto told NDTV that she was not afraid of the threats.

In the first reactions coming in from New Delhi, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said, ”We are shocked and saddened by this. Benazir was a promising leader with her own stature in Pakistan. It has happened at a time when the people of Pakistan were looking up to her. We offer our condolences to her bereaved family members and friends.”

Benazir is likely to be buried on Friday in Larkana near her father’s grave.

National and provincial assembly elections in Pakistan are due on January 8.

In October some 130 people were killed in an attack on Bhutto’s cavalcade when she returned to the country.

It was one of the worst incidents of violence in a year of deteriorating security in Pakistan.

There may be a second industrial corridor in the making. Inspired by the proposed Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor, the Tamil Nadu government has asked the commerce & industry ministry to consider a Bangalore-Chennai corridor. Government officials believe the corridor would entail an investment of around $20 billion.

“The Tamil Nadu government is of the view that the corridor between Chennai and Bangalore already has several key components in terms of availability of industries, skilled manpower and other basic infrastructure facilities,” said a senior official of the department of industrial policy & promotion (Dipp).

Officials feel the corridor can capitalise on the strengths of Chennai and Bangalore. The international airports in Chennai and Bangalore and the two major sea ports at Chennai and Ennore can further contribute to the growth of this corridor. Bangalore owes its strength to Information Technology while Chennai’s strength lies in automobile technology, manufacturing and electronics. The corridor would also facilitate the development of the neighbourhood within a radius of 20-25 km.

The Tamil Nadu government has said many multinational companies have set up huge manufacturing hubs in Chennai. Several special economic zones are also on cards. While most investments are in the Chennai-Sriperumbudur corridor, companies have already started setting up industries beyond Chennai-Sriperumbudur, and up to Ranipet. The Tamil Nadu government now wants to take this development up to Bangalore along the same highway.

The Centre may soon ask state governments to prepare feasibility reports for the corridor and arrange for finance from Indian as well as international financial institutions. “We think this corridor would benefit from the expertise the government has acquired while developing the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor,” an official said.

Meanwhile, the Centre as well as states have started work on the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor. States have started demarcating specific areas to be covered in each hub, drawing up plans for their development as industrial hubs with special economic zones, industrial estates, logistics parks and knowledge centres. The Janata Dal (Secular) party said it would oppose him in a confidence vote. Even with this Yeddyurappa went ahead to face the confidence vote but quit minutes before the voting took place.

Yeddyurappa was sworn in as Chief Minister November 12. Governor Rameshwar Thakur directed him to prove his majority before November 20. Yeddyurappa had become Chief Minister days after he changed his name from Yediyurappa to Yeddyurappa. He even officially notified the change through an affidavit dated October 11. But the stars seems to have failed Yeddy!!
