IT: need for more gender equality

IT: need for more gender equality

The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) President, Kiran Karnik, said here on Wednesday that a study by the association indicated that the percentage of women employed in the IT (information technology) and ITeS (IT-enabled Services) sectors might grow from 30 per cent to 45 per cent by 2010.

The male-female ratio was also expected to improve from 76:24 in 2006 to 65:35 by early 2008, he said.

Speaking at the Nasscom Women IT Leaders summit here, Mr. Karnik said, “There is a clear trend of more educated young women joining the industry because of progressive and flexible human resource management policies. IT does not require any gender-specific skills”.

Britannia Industries Managing Director, Vineeta Bali, said, “While competency will remain a basic skill for either gender, men in senior positions have to initiate changes needed for more gender equality. The industry should realise the vast talent pool in the form of women with necessary skills. Bobby Mitra, Managing Director, Texas Instruments-India, said “Within our organisation, women have filed for 25 patents in the U.S. over the last two years, meeting stringent criteria. Recently, a team led by a woman successfully completed a project that produced a chip twice the speed of a competitor”.

Jerry Rao, Chairman of MphasiS, said “Men in senior positions now need to realise how talented women staffers, if encouraged, can help the organisation. Sadly, even HR heads, who are women, do not recommend women for some senior positions. Managements on their part can meet some of the handicaps faced by women executives by providing training in communication skills such as making business presentations”. Source: Hindu

Wipro leads battle to fight fake CV racket

This is one battle you cannot fight alone. In a show of solidarity, three IT services companies, faced with the challenge of fake resumes, have decided to wage a joint war against the scourge.

Wipro Technologies has taken the initiative to team up with two other domestic IT services majors to create a database of ‘fake CVs’ that have being the rounds in the last four months, Mr Pradeep Bahirwani, Vice-President, Strategic Sourcing, Wipro Technologies, told Business Line.

The fake CV racketeering is not just at the candidate level, but it’s a well-oiled machinery that’s operating which has to be handled, he said.
Working method

The modus operandi of the people involved in the racket is extremely professional. There are people who create shell companies and let loose candidates in the industry who are supposed to have worked for these companies, Mr Bahirwani said.

The faking happens at all levels: companies worked for, experience, customer projects and sometimes academic qualifications.

In the four months since the three IT firms have started to share the database, they have unearthed names of over 100 candidates and an equal number of fake companies.
Wipro agents

At another level, there are fake companies calling themselves ‘agents of Wipro’ offering appointment letters to candidates in Tier-II cities for a ‘fee.’

Mr Bahirwani said: “There are candidates who land in Bangalore with offer letters on the day they are supposed to be ‘joining Wipro’. “The extent of the rot is disturbing and the industry has to show solidarity now,” he said.

This initiative will support Nasscom’s Skills Registry exercise, which will have a larger number of companies registering their employees in the list. Source: thehindubusinessline
