DreamWorks to get toon stuff done from Bangalore

DreamWorks to get toon stuff done from Bangalore

DreamWorks Animation, the makers of those cute and heart-tugging films like Shrek, Antz and Shark Tale, will soon be getting some of its brilliant animation work done from Bangalore. The Steven Spielberg-promoted studio signed a strategic alliance with Technicolor Servcies, a division of Thomson, the e6 billion media and entertainment group to develop “world animation abilities in India”.

The deal allows Thomson to leverage its acquisition of Bangalore-based Paprikaas Studios, an animation and game content provider that the company bought for an undisclosed amount in February this year. Content services, of which animation is a part, contributed $500-600 million to the company’s turnover last year.

“It is a great achievement for us” says Thomson India vice-president Thierry Pasquet. “Paprikaas already has a renowned studio. This deal allows us to go one step further in improving its quality and image. Someday we may be able to produce Shrek 4 in India,” he says. Paprikaas recently won a “Best TV series” award at the Australian Effects and Animation Festival in Sydney for its work on FARMkids, an animated children’s series.

As part of the alliance DreamWorks will have access to the spanking new 100,000-square-foot digital studio that Thomson has recently set up in Whitefield (an Eastern suburb of Bangalore that houses R&D centers of companies like GE and SAP). Pasquet says that it is the first of its kind facility in Asia but declined to say how much the company had invested in it.

A press release issued by Thomson says that DreamWorks will assist Technicolor in the recruitment, training and development of animation talent to the Paprikaas facility in India. “Our objective is to tap into and further develop the gifted base in India with the potential to do feature-level work” said Ann Daly, Chief Operating Officer, DreamWorks.

Pasquet says that India has all the assets for becoming a major animation hub just like in BPO and IT services. According to Nasscom, the global animation market, growing at 9 percent, will reach $26 bn by 2009. The animation development market, which is growing at 34 percent, will be a $950 mn market by then. The number of animated feature films released annually has grown from just one a decade ago to over 20 between 2004-2006.

“We now have a good foothold in India which we can leverage to expand our services to Indian as well as International clients,” says Pasquet adding that DreamWorks, which has a large animation facility in California, was looking to set up an animation studio in India. After scouting around for opportunities the studio decided to go with Technicolor, famous for brining color to motion pictures over 90 years ago. Source: economictimes

Yahoo! Bangalore centre will remain global hub

Yahoo! Bangalore centre will remain global hub

“We have almost 1,500 employees in the Bangalore R&D centre itself, which is a huge number for any one centre,” official says.

India will continue to be Yahoo’s research and development (R&D) hub for catering to the global information technology market, a top company official said.

“Our India operations, namely Yahoo! India, has its R&D centre in Bangalore. It was set up for doing product innovations for not only India but also for the global market. This function of our R&D centre will continue and even grow in the future,” Head, Yahoo! Research, Prabhakar Raghavan, said here.

“India has the right atmosphere for catering to the global market by providing Internet services, technological tools and marketing solutions for businesses both in India and internationally. We have almost 1,500 employees in the Bangalore R&D centre itself, which is a huge number for any one centre. This shows the capability of the centre to be an international hub for IT related activities,” Raghavan said.

The Yahoo! Research Head was here to attend a two-day summit on the IT sector called Infovision 2007.

On the prospects of the convergence of mobile phone and Internet application in India, Rahgavan said that though India and China had many mobile devices, most of them were not data-rich phones, not fully digital.
“The challenge here is to create service and monetisation models that would help serve the market in a better way. We have such programmes in the pipeline. The challenge is also to find a greater variety of services to appeal to a larger audience,” he said. Source: deccanherald

South on road to $20 bn industrial corridor

There may be a second industrial corridor in the making. Inspired by the proposed Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor, the Tamil Nadu government has asked the commerce & industry ministry to consider a Bangalore-Chennai corridor. Government officials believe the corridor would entail an investment of around $20 billion.

“The Tamil Nadu government is of the view that the corridor between Chennai and Bangalore already has several key components in terms of availability of industries, skilled manpower and other basic infrastructure facilities,” said a senior official of the department of industrial policy & promotion (Dipp).

Officials feel the corridor can capitalise on the strengths of Chennai and Bangalore. The international airports in Chennai and Bangalore and the two major sea ports at Chennai and Ennore can further contribute to the growth of this corridor. Bangalore owes its strength to Information Technology while Chennai’s strength lies in automobile technology, manufacturing and electronics. The corridor would also facilitate the development of the neighbourhood within a radius of 20-25 km.

The Tamil Nadu government has said many multinational companies have set up huge manufacturing hubs in Chennai. Several special economic zones are also on cards. While most investments are in the Chennai-Sriperumbudur corridor, companies have already started setting up industries beyond Chennai-Sriperumbudur, and up to Ranipet. The Tamil Nadu government now wants to take this development up to Bangalore along the same highway.

The Centre may soon ask state governments to prepare feasibility reports for the corridor and arrange for finance from Indian as well as international financial institutions. “We think this corridor would benefit from the expertise the government has acquired while developing the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor,” an official said.

Meanwhile, the Centre as well as states have started work on the Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor. States have started demarcating specific areas to be covered in each hub, drawing up plans for their development as industrial hubs with special economic zones, industrial estates, logistics parks and knowledge centres. Actress Deepika Padukone was the centre of attention at the birthday party of cricketer Yuvraj Singh on Wednesday.

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone attended Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s birthday party at Enigma, J W Marriott, Wednesday, December 12 and mingled with his close friends and family “as if she belongs to Yuvraj’s family.”

“The duo looked more than just friends if their body language was any indication,” a source told the Mumbai Mirror.

In late November, Deepika, 21, and Yuvraj, 26, spent an evening together in Jaipur after the completion of the ODI against Australia.

Deepika flew to Jaipur in Gautam Singhania’s private jet to witness the ODI and spend time with Yuvraj, who is the son of former Indian pace bowler, Yograj Singh.

After the match Yuvraj and Deepika took off on a long drive and wrapped up the day with a romantic dinner.

Deepika is known to be close to Nihar Pandya, a family friend. However, she has steadfastly denied that they are anything more than good friends.

A close friend of Nihar says, “Deepika’s relationship with Nihar is over. She has moved on. Now, Deepika and Yuvraj are a couple.”

India’s ODI cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at one time believed to be enamored by Deepika.

When quizzed about Dhoni, Deepika denied any romantic linkage telling CNN-IBN recnetly:

“I don’t know where it started.”
