Beware, litter cops are watching

Beware, litter cops are watching

These litter cops will levy spot fines ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000, depending on the nature of the offence committed.

As part of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s efforts to bring about a cleaner City, 60 “litter cops” have been appointed to rein in littering public on four major commercial thoroughfares.

These “litter cops” will levy spot fines ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000, depending on the nature of the offence committed.

Kempe Gowda Road, M G Road, Cubbon Road and Commercial Street are the thoroughfares which these cops will be patrolling within a fortnight, official sources told Deccan Herald. “Misusing water meant for drinking, urinating in public, throwing garbage around, spitting/expectorating and allowing pet animals to mess around are aspects these cops will be monitoring very keenly,” they said.

Dustbins will be placed every 100 metres on these streets to ensure that the public has a proper garbage disposal system in place.

“The cops will be equipped with a handycam each to record the behaviour of the public so that the charges won’t be disputed,” the sources said. They will also have special uniforms bearing BBMP logos.

BBMP officials will be around to assist them in their work, the sources said.

The team will be empowered to issue show-cause notice to shopkeepers as well as individuals who do not abide by rules. There are plans to increase the number of “litter cops” to cover 200 commercial streets in the City at a later stage.

A Bangalore-based agency, Major Territorial Army, headed by B N Nandukumar, a retired army man, has been awarded the contract.

The provision for penalty has been made under the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act 1996 Sec 431 Schedule (1). Citizens who violate the rule can be booked for cognisable offence under KMC Act 478 and Compounding of Offence Rules 1996.

Five-year-old girl stays with dead parents for 2 days

Five-year-old Monisha has forgotten the rhymes she’s been singing since she joined LKG at a private convent recently.

Lying on a bed in the intensive care unit at M S Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bangalore, all that a shocked Monisha can remember is her mother trying to strangle her with a dupatta. She screams endlessly, remembering the gory incident, unaware that her parents are no more.

Her parents, Nagesh and Sandhya, committed suicide by hanging at their house in Saraswatinagar, Bapuji Layout, in Vijayanagar police limits on Monday. Though her mother tried to kill her, she escaped death. The unconscious Monisha woke up to find her parents hanging from a fan.

The tragedy came to light when the shocked child opened the door for her uncle on Tuesday morning. She was immediately rushed to hospital. She is yet to understand what it is to be an orphan, and her relatives, too, have no clue about her future.

Doctors attending on Monisha are positive that she will recover from her injuries. But they are not sure when she will be able to get over the mental trauma. “At present, she is hysterical and irritable. She is in the ICU, but her vital parameters are stable. The girl does not realize the gravity of the situation and what she has undergone in the last 48 hours,”said Dr Naresh Shetty, chief of the hospital.

“We are yet to recover from the shock of losing the happy couple. This apart, even the little girl is in the hospital bed. Once she recovers, the elders will decide about Monisha’s future,” Thimme Gowda, advocate and brother-in-law of Nagesh told The Times of India.

Nagesh was an assistant manager in Duckworth Flavours India Private Limited in Whitefield, where he worked for the past eight years. His colleagues, who saw him last on Friday, are shocked. “We have no clue what might have driven the couple to such an extreme step. He behaved normally on the last working day at the office,” said K G K Murthy, the owner of the company, who, along with Nagesh’s colleagues, visited the hospital.

Nagesh’s father Bette Gowda, a resident of Kilara in Kunigal taluk, settled in Bangalore after retiring as assistant commissioner in the labour department a decade ago. Nagesh lost his father eight years ago and his mother soon after. Source: timesofindia.indiatimes

Reactions to Bhutto assassination

Reactions to Bhutto assassination

The killing of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in a presumed suicide attack at an election rally in Rawalpindi has drawn widespread national and international condemnation.

PAKISTAN OPPOSITION LEADER NAWAZ SHARIF
It is not a sad day, it is a dark, darkest, gloomiest day in the history of this country. Something unthinkable has happened. Something inconceivable, unthinkable has happened.

US STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN TOM CASEY
Certainly, we condemn the attack on this rally. It demonstrates that there are still those in Pakistan who want to subvert reconciliation and efforts to advance democracy.

FRENCH PRESIDENT NICOLAS SARKOZY

I condemn this odious act with the greatest severity.

Terrorism and violence have no place in the democratic debate and in the combat of ideas and programmes. More than ever it is necessary for the [Pakistani] legislative elections to… take place in conditions of pluralism, transparency and security.

UK FOREIGN SECRETARY DAVID MILIBAND
In targeting Benazir Bhutto, extremist groups have in their sights all those committed to democratic processes in Pakistan.

They cannot and must not succeed.

RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN MIKHAIL KAMYNIN
We firmly condemn this terrorist act, we express our condolences to Benazir Bhutto’s relatives and loved ones, and we hope that the Pakistani leadership will manage to take necessary steps to ensure stability in the country.

VATICAN SPOKESMAN FREDERICO LOMBARDI
This attack shows how extremely difficult it is to pacify a nation so wrought by violence.

We share the sadness of the Pakistani population.

INDIAN PRIME MINISTER MANMOHAN SINGH
In her death the subcontinent has lost an outstanding leader who worked for democracy and reconciliation in her country.

The manner of her going is a reminder of the common dangers that our region faces from cowardly acts of terrorism and of the need to eradicate this dangerous threat.

Benazir Bhutto Killed in Attack

Pakistan former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto Killed in Attack

After surviving several assassination attempts in the past, PPP leader Benazir Bhutto was not so lucky on Thursday as she was killed by two gunmen who opened fire at her right after she finished addressing a rally at Liaquatbagh.

Bhutto got off the stage after addressing the rally and started moving towards her car. Her vehicle moved a certain distance and she was surrounded by party supporters.

She came out of the car and just then two attackers with AK 47s pumped her with bullets, one in the neck and two in the head, before blowing themselves up.

The attack also killed more than 20 people and left several others injured.

Following Bhutto’s death, a high alert has been sounded in Pakistan. President Musharraf has convened an emergency meeting of top advisors. Shops and petrol pumps have closed in many cities fearing violence.

Shops across Rawalpindi are being torched by PPP supporters. Asif Zardari and his children are on their way to Karachi.

According to preliminary reports, Benazir finished the rally at 5:30 pm at Liaquatbagh and was on her way back to Ralwal. She got into the car and was soon after attacked by two people with AK 47s. A suicide bomber blew himself up next to car.

Nawaz Sharif described Benazir Bhutto’s assassination as the most tragic incident in the history of Pakistan.

”I myself feel threatened,” says Sharif, whose party temporarily suspended the electioneering in the wake of the assassination.

”Are things in control now? Had things been in control, would this have happened?” he said, adding that Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf would have to give answers.

”I also feel unprotected and the lady must also have been feeling very unprotected,” Sharif said.

Criticising Musharraf, he said, ”If Musharraf can spend crores on his own security, could he not spend some amount on the security of Bhutto.”

Fifty-four-year-old Benazir was rushed to Rawalpindi general hospital, where she was pronounced dead nearly 40 minutes later.

”We are traumatised. People all over are crying. Everyone is saying that this Army has killed Benazir. There is going to be more bloodshed. Will the world now finally wake up? said a distraught Asma Jehangir, Chairperson, Pak Human Rights Commission.

”It is very tragic. It has shocked every Pakistani,” said Ayaz Amir, columnist.

Prof. Bhim Singh, Chairman of the National Panthers Party and Member of National Integration Council (NIC) while condemning the brutal assassination of Benazir Bhutto Pakistan’s foremost political leader and the former Prime Minister termed it as most cowardice act of the terrorists and total failure of Pakistan government.

Bhutto is survived by her husband Asif Ali Zardari and three children. Before she returned to Pakistan in October, Benazir Bhutto told NDTV that she was not afraid of the threats.

In the first reactions coming in from New Delhi, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said, ”We are shocked and saddened by this. Benazir was a promising leader with her own stature in Pakistan. It has happened at a time when the people of Pakistan were looking up to her. We offer our condolences to her bereaved family members and friends.”

Benazir is likely to be buried on Friday in Larkana near her father’s grave.

National and provincial assembly elections in Pakistan are due on January 8.

In October some 130 people were killed in an attack on Bhutto’s cavalcade when she returned to the country.

It was one of the worst incidents of violence in a year of deteriorating security in Pakistan.
